This Week's Gravestone

Sally Hier

SALLY wife of EBER HIER, DIED Jine 9, 1854. AE. 58.

Prospect Cemetery, East Middlebury VT

Sally's husband Eber died 23 years later in East Middlebury and doesn't appear to be buried next to her. There is spacing indicating he could be and maybe his stone is under the sod. Eber was the son of "an old Hessian soldier from the British army, Hendrick Hier (1758-1840), who tilled a sterile tract on the mountain side", according to the history of the Middlebury Congregational Church. Sally's great-great-great-great grandfather was Edward Doty of the Mayflower. Edward is among other things reported as being the first to step ashore at Plymouth Rock as well as the first European to fight a duel in America.
