The basic form of a Celtic cross is of a cross enclosed in a nimbus (cirle). The Celtic cross is pagan in origin and predates Christianity by a number of centuries. The symbolism of the Irish cross is strongly tied to Mother Earth and national pride. The four arms can represent the four elements - air, earth, fire, and water.*

Notice the 'dollar sign' symbol on the reverse of the cross. It is actually "Iota Eta Sigma", the first 3 letters of Jesus in Greek. Their son George's inscription is on the base of the cross.
